When information about creeping liberalism in our colleges and seminaries, and on our mission fields in China, India, and the Philippines began to reach the local congregation after the initial expose in 1926-27, it took two decades or more for many churches to decide whether they were going to become denominationalized or remain independent. Ultimately our 9,000 churches split just about down the middle. Presently there are 5,600 independent churches known locally either as Churches of Christ or Christian Churches, and about 4,300 officially known as βThe Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)β.
